Why Corsets?
The corset is the central garment of #boobcore fashion for a specific and practical reason: a bespoke corset is drafted from the wearer's individual measurements — over 20 points of the torso — meaning it's designed for that specific body from the start, not adapted from a template. This is categorically different from every other commercial garment.
For busty figures specifically, a well-made bespoke corset solves problems that other garments cannot: it provides genuine underbust support, creates waist definition that's proportional to the wearer's actual figure, and sits at the correct torso height for the individual rather than a standardised assumption.
Steel Boning — Why It Matters
The type of boning determines everything about how a corset performs. Spiral steel boning is flexible in multiple directions — it's used in curved seams where the body needs to flex. Flat steel boning is rigid in one plane — it's used at the front busk and side support panels where rigidity is structural. Plastic boning cannot provide the same structural support as steel and degrades faster under the pressure of regular wear.
Quality corsets use a combination of both types, placed strategically according to the construction of the specific corset. This is not something you can replicate cheaply.
Coutil Interlining
Coutil is the traditional corsetry interlining fabric — a heavy, tightly woven cotton twill that resists stretch in all directions. It forms the structural layer that distributes tension across the garment rather than concentrating it at seams. All proper bespoke corsets use coutil or an equivalent.
The Commission Process
Chimera Costumes accepts limited corset commissions at a base price of $1,820 (covering 28 hours of craftsmanship plus materials, quoted separately). The process involves in-person fittings — multiple sessions over the commission period — which are non-negotiable for accurate fit. The result is a corset that fits precisely and performs reliably for years.
Off-the-Rack Corsets
Off-the-shelf corsets can be a reasonable starting point if bespoke is not accessible. Look for: steel boning (not plastic), coutil or similar interlining (the garment should feel structured when empty), flat-felled or otherwise finished seams, and a brand with accurate sizing information. Expect to size differently than your clothing size — corset sizing is based on waist measurement, and many people size down from their usual clothing waist.

Decades, with proper care. A well-constructed corset should outlast most other items in your wardrobe.
For Chimera Costumes corsets: in-person fittings are required. This is non-negotiable for accurate fit. Other makers may offer remote fitting processes but accuracy will be more variable.
Fashion corsets prioritise appearance and occasional wear. Waist-training corsets are built for extended daily wear with progressive reduction. The construction differs in boning count, fabric choices, and the degree of structure. Chimera Costumes builds to the intended use.
